Compassionately guiding your healing
Hello & welcome.
I am so glad you have arrived here.
My name is Alana and I am the founder of Compati Counselling.
Compati, the latin translation of compassion, is a soothing balm for healing our suffering and shifting our experiences in the world and within ourselves. When we meet the undesired parts of ourselves with curiosity and compassion, we are supported to change our beliefs and behaviours.
Anxiety, depression, perfectionism, substance misuse, self harm, disordered eating, over working and burnout may be some of the struggles and symptoms you are experiencing. These symptoms can serve as cues you are living out of alignment with your authentic self. A life altering experience such as illness, betrayal in relationship, divorce, job loss, accident or death of a loved one often intensifies these symptoms and they can become debilitating. These experiences have the potential to break our hearts and in the breaking, crack us open to the discovery of our true selves. Knowing our authentic self and living in alignment can foster a more meaningful, fulfilling life.
Everyone’s struggles and symptoms are unique, however, suffering is the common thread connecting all human experiences. I, too, have experienced suffering. I am intimately familiar with emotional and physical pain. Living with chronic illness, grief and loss, I have been cracked open to discover my authentic self and align with my purpose. I believe in the innate wisdom of each of us and I am inspired by the tremendous growth I witness as my clients uncover and reconnect with themselves.
My purpose is to compassionately support you on your journey home, within yourself. It would be an honour.

Experience, Education and Affiliations
I have been working in the health care field for more than 20 years with a diverse range of experiences including as a registered nurse, a medical case manager and a health care researcher. I am a Canadian Certified Counsellor with a Master’s of Arts in Counselling Psychology in the faculty of Education from the University of British Columbia.
As a person living with rare, chronic health conditions and as a parent to a child with health conditions, I am intimately familiar with the challenges and distress that may be experienced when living with chronic illness. My early experiences as a patient fostered a familarity and interest in the health care field and I chose to pursue a career in nursing.
As a nurse, I experienced the external and internal stresses of providing care to others. My interest in the emotional health of both the patient and the provider led me to complete my Master’s in Counselling Psychology. In my Master’s research, I explored the emotional distress often experienced in provider-patient relationships.
I have additional education and experience in meditation and mindful self compassion, attachment theory, somatic therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, internal family systems therapy, grief therapy, motivational interviewing, existential therapy, critical incident stress debriefing, substance use and disaster management.
I have been an active member in the rare disease community, having served for many years on the Board of Directors with the Rare Disease Foundation, a not for profit organization supporting those living with and affected by rare diseases.
Most recently, I worked as a clinical counsellor with a large health authority in a program providing multidisciplinary services to those with complex and chronic illnesses.

Chronic Illness
Living with chronic illness can be a very distressing, isolating and invisible experience. Healthcare professionals, family and friends may not understand, or even doubt your experiences. Sharing your experiences, being heard and understood in a safe relationship can be the first step towards healing.
-
Healthcare Professionals
With multiple strains and stresses in the healthcare system, many professionals may experience anxiety, depression, compassion fatigue and burnout. The energy to care for others, and self, may have become depleted. Exploring these feelings and behaviours can be relieving and reenergizing.

Life Transitions
Throughout life we experience many transitions and some of these transitions may create feelings of confusion, anxiety, grief and hopelessness. Whether you are experiencing the transition of relationship status, job loss, death of a loved one or a change in health, sharing these experiences in a safe relationship can support and ease the transition.

Spiritual Awakening
A spiritual awakening can be catalyzed by an intense life experience profound relationship, an accident or illness. These experiences are often disorienting with many emotional, psychological and physical manifestations. Receiving guidance and support during this time can help validate your experience, offer insight and support integration of your new awareness.
When we join together in a counselling session, all parts of you are welcomed. My warmth and compassion, joy and humour have the ability to foster a safe relationship to hold and explore your suffering. I will gently guide you into your pain and support you to discover and give voice to deep wounds, easing the grip of emotional and physical suffering.
I am a client-centered therapist using a psychospiritual approach. With a background in nursing, I have a broad and deep understanding of the body, the mind and the connection between the two. My holistic integrated lens supports my clients’ compassionate understanding of their physical, emotional and spiritual selves.
Depending on your needs, I weave mindfulness and mindful self-compassion practices, polyvagal theory, somatic therapy, attachment theory, acceptance and commitment therapy, internal family systems theory, cognitive behavioural therapy and existential therapy from a trauma informed lens.
